Corticosteroid Injections for Foot and Ankle Pain

Corticosteroid injections are commonly offered by foot and ankle surgeons to alleviate pain and swelling associated with a variety of foot and ankle conditions. These injections can provide effective relief when other treatments have not been successful.

What Are Corticosteroid Injections?

A cortisone shot is an injection that contains corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic. These injections are designed to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in a specific area of the foot or ankle. In many cases, cortisone shots can be administered directly in the doctor’s office for convenience.

Common Uses of Corticosteroid Injections

Cortisone shots are frequently used to treat the following foot and ankle conditions:

  • Gout
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Bursitis
  • Capsulitis
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis

The Injection Procedure

  1. Preparation: The area around the injection site will be cleaned, often with alcohol, to ensure it is sterile.
  2. Numbing: Your podiatrist may apply an anesthetic spray to numb the injection site.
  3. Injection: You will feel some pressure as the needle is inserted. The corticosteroid (e.g., dexamethasone) and anesthetic (e.g., lidocaine) are then injected into the area. The anesthetic provides immediate pain relief, while the corticosteroid reduces inflammation over time.

Side Effects and Risks

While cortisone injections can be highly effective, there are potential side effects, including:

  • Joint infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Thinning of skin and soft tissue
  • Temporary flare-up of pain and inflammation
  • Tendon weakening or rupture
  • Osteoporosis (thinning of bone)
  • Skin lightening (whitening) around the injection site
  • Osteonecrosis (death of nearby bone)
  • Temporary increase in blood sugar levels

Because of the potential side effects, there are usually limits on how many cortisone shots you can receive within a year.

When Are Corticosteroid Injections Used?

Corticosteroid injections are often considered when other conservative treatments (such as rest, physical therapy, or medications) have not provided sufficient relief. They are typically used for acute flare-ups of inflammation and pain.
