A blister is a small pocket of fluid that forms on the skin. They occur for different reasons.

Blisters on your feet, can cause difficulty walking, exercising, or standing for long periods of time.

Causes

  • Poorly fitting shoes can cause friction that leads to blistering of the skin. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can create problems.
  • Excessive sweating/moisture of feet inside of shoes can create the perfect environment for a blister to form.
  • Certain medical conditions such as fungal infections or auto-immune disorders can cause blistering on the feet.

Treatment

It is not recommended to burst a blister at home on your own, as it may become infected.

Covering blisters with a band-aid can provide relief until the blister heals.

If blister continues to be painful, a podiatrist can safely lance the blister, and help to treat the underlying cause.

Prevention

Proper fitting shoes can prevent blisters that are caused by friction and rubbing. Also, utilizing moleskin and padding can prevent rubbing.

Making sure to keep your feet dry with moisture wicking socks and foot powder/spray can prevnt blisters that are caused by excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

If blisters are caused by an allergen, avoiding the triggering material that is present in your shoe or sock can decrease the incidence of painful blisters.

Medical conditions that cause blisters need to be diagnosed and treated by a medical professional.
