Dancer’s, especially ballerinas, are prone to foot and ankle injuries. The high demand that the sport places on the feet and ankles can cause acutely traumatic injuries or issues that are due to repetitive stress.
Posterior Ankle
Os trigonum impingement syndrome: an “extra bone” that some people have in the back of the ankle can become irritated when a ballerina is “en pointe”
Achilles Tendonitis: A change in shoegear or choreography, along with an increase in activity level can put a dancer an increased risk of inflammation of the achilles tendon.
Anterior Ankle
The tendons and ligaments on the front of the ankle can become irriated and inflamed from repetitive stress on jumping during many types of dance.
Ankle Sprains
Falling when trying to land from a jump or tripping over the feet during dance make ankle sprains a common dancing injury. These are more acutely traumatic than the other prevalent dance injuries.
A combination of conservative treatment modalities is always the first line the treatment when dealing with dance injuries. Surgical correction is always an option if the injury is unable to be healed with other therapeutic options.
