Bunions are a bony bump present at the big toe joint. They can be extremely painful to many people, often because of the bump rubbing against shoe gear. Most bunions start out small, however many progress to become increasingly large and painful over time.
They can be caused by pressure from shoes that push the big toe over towards the second toe, resulting in a deforming force at the big toe joint. They can also be hereditary, or be related to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Bunions can be treated in many ways, however can only be “reversed” by surgical correction. Conservative management includes wider shoe gear and protective padding to help prevent rubbing of the shoes on the bony bump.
If surgery is desired, the extent of the bunion will be evaluated to choose the proper procedure to best alleviate your pain.
