When I show patients their foot X-rays, one of the most common questions I hear is, “What are those round white spots?” These small, round bones are called sesamoids, and they play a crucial role in the foot’s mechanics. Found under the big toe joint, sesamoids help the joint move smoothly and painlessly during walking and other activities.
However, these tiny bones can sometimes become inflamed or injured, resulting in pain and discomfort—a condition known as sesamoiditis.
Sesamoiditis is an overuse injury caused by repetitive trauma to the sesamoid bones. This condition typically leads to localized pain under the ball of the foot, often near the tibial sesamoid, which is the most commonly affected bone.
Dancers, particularly ballet dancers, are prone to sesamoiditis because of the significant time they spend putting pressure on the balls of their feet.
At Innovative Foot & Ankle, we specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions like sesamoiditis. Our team offers personalized care plans, ranging from conservative measures like dancer’s pads to advanced orthotic solutions. Don’t let foot pain slow you down—schedule a consultation today!
